The past weekend was one of the warmest autumn days that I could ever remember. It was October 2nd and the temperature was 27 degrees! The conditions weren’t perfect for Trout fishing so we decided to take advantage of the warmer weather and try our luck for some Osoyoos Lake Small Mouth Bass!
We arrived at the lake at 1:30pm and launch the boat from Hayes Point Provincial Park on the south side of town. Since we only had about 6 hours of day light our plan was to work the shallows along the Hayes Point Park. We started our luck by casting Crank and Spinner Baits to cover the body of water then once we get a few hits we would give a slower presentation by using jigs and Senkos. After about 2 hours of fishing we didn’t get a bite on the faster moving baits so we switched to soft plastics.
We had better luck with the tubes (purple and green) but the fish were all small fry. We worked our way past the north end of Hayes Point and over the shallow ridge. We found larger fish coming up on the sonar between 12 and 15 feet. We switched up to a green and white, 4 inch Senko Worm and positioned the boat in 9 feet of water and casted out to 12 -15 feet then worked the lure back into the shallows. This presentation brought us the action! Within 1 ½ hours we had 5 Small Mouth Bass all over 4 pounds to the boat! The biggest fish was just over 6 pounds! We tried every type of colour of Senko and plastics but the larger fish would have nothing to do with it unless it was green and white! My wife Marina had the best of luck and brought majority of the fish in. We found that by using a red hook Texas rigged was the most productive presentation.
What an amazing day, we experienced an August day of weather and bass fishing during the second day of October! That’s some Okanagan weather for you! So get out there and go hunt down some BC Bass on Osoyoos Lake! You will not be disappointed!
