BC Fishn Media, the BC Wildlife Federation Region 8, and Multiple Okanagan Fish & Game Clubs are partnering up with the Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC (GOFishBC.com) and the Ministry of Forests, Lands, & Natural Resources to help grow the Learn to Fish Program for 2015.
The Learn to Fish Program is an exciting initiative designed to introduce participants to recreational fishing. The fun, hands-on lessons make it a perfect fit for youth and their families as well as organized groups of all ages and abilities. Since its launch in 2006, the program has been delivered to over 100,000 youth and their families across the province!
Last year, 2014, the above mentioned British Columbia angling groups organized multiple family ice fishing events throughout the BC Interior that introduced hundreds of families to the sport of fishing. We have quickly discovered that ice fishing provides an excellent opportunity to introduce angling to the community. The ease of access, the ability to take large groups fishing, as well as the exciting social aspect of ice fishing makes for successful angling events.
This year two Learn to Fish ice fishing events will be held in the Okanagan Region.
- Yellow Lake, (located 20kms south west of Penticton on Hwy 3A) on Saturday January 24th, 2015. The event will be hosted as a drop in style from 10am to 3pm; so stay for the entire day or come for a couple of hours!
- Beaver Lake (changed from Swan Lake due to safety concerns), (located east of Winfield on Beaver Lake Rd) on Saturday February 7th, 2015. This event will also be hosted as a drop in style from 10am to 3pm.
Within the events angling techniques, ice safety, ethical angling practices and fish biology (what’s happening under the ice) will be taught to the attending participants. All ice fishing gear and bait is provided to participants along with a BBQ Hot Dog lunch at NO COST! No registration is required! It’s highly recommended to bring rubber insulated boots and an extra pair of socks.
Thanks to generous event sponsors Cabela’s Canada and local fish and game clubs, there will be ice fishing shelters and underwater cameras at the events so the kids can watch the action under the ice!
These events are open to all members of the community! Fishing licenses are required for anyone over the ages of 16 and all fishing regulations apply during these events.
So gather up the family and come on out and enjoy a great day of ice fishing! There will be lots of fun for all members of the family to enjoy! BC Fishn’ looks forward to seeing you there!
