What is the right leader length when trolling a lure such as a wedding ring behind a set of Gang or Lake Troll flashers? There really is no right answer, however following this basic guideline will help increase your results. When the water clarity is extreme you want to lengthen your leader further away from your flashers. Many times in clear water fish will stay back from your flashers as they curiously check out your presentation, so running a longer leader will put the lure in the strike zone of the fish. When the water is more murky then shorten your leader length as the fish will swim closer to your flashers and hence they will be closer to your lure. A great example of this is when Kokanee fishing in extreme clear water we will run our leaders to our small spoons or spinners as far back as 30 inches. Once the water starts to become more murky due to things such as algae blooms we will run shorter leaders from 12-16 inches. Another great tip is to adjust the size of flashers based on water clarity. The more clear the water the smaller the flasher and vice versa in cloudy water!
