Drew and I headed out today to try our luck for some early autumn bass fishing on Vaseux Lake, BC. (South of OK Falls). The weather pattern the previous few days was much colder than today, around 15 degrees, today was much warmer with a high of 25 degrees. The dramatic temperature change made the bass a challenge to track down as they were scattered at all depths.
We started the day by targeting the west side of the island on the south end of the lake. This area is usually known to produce decent size Large Mouth between 2 to 4 pounds. We hooked into 2 bass around 2 pounds in this area by using shad coloured crank baits. The winds started to pick up so we headed to the south bay area and jigged with Senko’s, but no luck only a few small hits.
To avoid the wind we rowed the boat down the eastside of the lake targeting the rocky areas for some Small Mouths. Not much luck just a few more light hits on the crank baits.
Once we got to half way up the lake near the boat launch we started to see a bit more action. The large mouths were bedded in the deeper waters around the 15 foot mark. I snagged into one using a green pumpkin coloured Senko.
What was very impressive today was how aggressive the small fry were. We couldn’t keep the little guys off our hooks, no matter what type or size of lures we were using. This year’s spawn was obviously very healthy and it should make for a decent next year.
The Osoyoos Sockeye made their way all the way up to Vaseux Lake this year. We saw numerous spawned out Sockeye along the shoreline and a few red beauties swimming in the shallows.
The rumour is that Vaseux Lake can be finicky for fishing. The spring and fall are the best times to fish this lake. The lake allows NO MOTORS as it is a wildlife reserve area. Minnow patterns and sink baits such as tubes and Senkos can produce well on this lake but don’t leave out the Crank Baits. We found that when these fish were active they hit the fast moving baits very aggressively. When fishing this lake work the west shoreline down to the island and cast the edge of the weed beds for the Large Mouths. Target the rocky shore line for the Small Mouths.
I’m not as familiar with this lake as I would like to be. Drew and I are looking forward to fishing this lake more often as it offers decent fishing and some great wildlife! It was very relaxing to get back in touch with nature today by rowing around the lake with out the hum of a motor. We can’t wait to head back to Vaseux in April to try our luck again with the spring pre spawn!
Tight lines!
